A few things to keep in mind when it comes to summer tires

Spring has arrived and warmer weather appears to be just on the horizon. With that in mind, many drivers are looking forward to installing their summer tires and their summer wheels. But is it too early to do so and do you run the risk of getting caught with the wrong tires at the wrong time?

Summer tires aren't effective if it is cold outside. Specifically, summer tires will harden when the outside temperature drops below 7°. When that happens, the tires offer less stability and less stopping power. When you drive on summer tires in cold weather, you are also increasing wear and tear on your tires.

And then there is the question of the last snowstorm. Canadians know that winter is persistent, and it isn't unusual to get our last snowstorm in late March or early April. According to the Weather Network, many regions in Canada get a snowstorm in April once out of every three years.

In other words:

• It's probably best to wait until early April to install your summer tires
• In March, the weather outside is still too cold
• It's not too early to book an appointment right now, however
