History of the Range Rover
SInce unveiling in 1970, the Range Rover has seen generations of improvements and evolution. Today, the Range Rover has earned a name as the world’s most luxurious SUV. The ultra-capable utility truck is unmatched in performance ability and advanced design. Inspired engineering continues with ever-improving technology as Range Rovers are still produced today today
Range Rover Generation 1
The first incarnation of Land Rover’s Range Rover prototype was named the Velar, meaning to veil or uncover. In 1970, the 3-door prototype was received with widespread critical acclaim. With a rare combination of utility and design, the Range Rover offered the world’s first permanent 4wd and split tailgate design, clamshell bonnet, and continuous waistline. This was an introduction to the world of in utility vehicles.
Range Rover Generation 2 & 3
Following worldwide success of Generation 1, the Range Rover 2nd and 3rd generations added further design and luxury features. Still remaining true to the iconic silhouette, a monocoque shell body was introduced and metallic trims were added to the interior.
The first Sport trim was introduced, demonstrating Land Rover’s commitment to performance. It featured the famous Range Rover air-ride suspension system to optimize comfort. During these years the Range Rover found a real identity as a luxury vehicle.
Range Rover Generation 4
The fourth incarnation of Range Rover adopted the lightweight demands of consumers. Recognizable by its floating roof, this fuel-efficient generation did not ever compromise on capability or performance. During this generation, the Range Rover Hybrid, 2nd generation Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Sport SVR and Range Rover Evoque Convertible were all introduced.
Finally, in 2017, the Range Rover Velar was introduced. As newest addition to the Range Rover family, clean lines and excellent capabilities depict the future of luxury, refinement, and capability that Range Rover will continue into the future.
